Hmmmm!!! Homophily?
Hmmmm, what is Homophily? “The tendency for people to seek out or be attracted to those who are similar to themselves.”(Dictionary) That’s why people flock to different social media posts because it something that they can relate too.
“The term “social network” refers both to a person’s connections to other people in the real world and to a platform that supports online communication, such as Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. The term is now used more often in the second sense, and the Internet provides an opportunity for anyone to create an online identity, connect with friends, family, and strangers alike, and acquire knowledge, and share ideas and information without having to be physically present. Instead, one’s presence is represented on social media by shared comments, photos, videos, and other images.”(Psychology today)
Algorithms are explicitly made for homophily. They take the substance you have looked as well as preferred in your set of experiences and convey that substance to you. For example, YouTube does through music or videos you may have watched before. When you log in again it has the content waiting for you that is similar to what you watched before. Hulu, Netflix’s, Facebook, and Instagram do as well.
Instagram will have advertisement that will be from your previous search online. For example it may post Amazon aid based off your search content or watched content.
Facebook has different groups that have become popular because of being in this pandemic more people want to feel connected. For example, I’m in a group called Wine Divas. We made play game so people can win money we send through cashapp or people create basket to drop off with wine and other items. It’s a way to stay connected to those who have similar taste.
